Alternatives to Snowmen at a Dude Ranch

Ran across this picture on the Heather Jansch Facebook page. We featured her more traditional medium, driftwood, a few weeks back in our blog post “On Following Dreams”. Since Colorado has been hit pretty heavy with snow this past week, we wanted to tribute her newest horse, sculpted from snow! Gives us something to work towards the next time we have a couple of feet up at the mountain, and would love to feature any more snow horses from our fans and guests! Send us a picture of yours to kit@blackmtnranch.com! We’d love to...

Super Bowl Sunday- Bring on the Horses

It’s Super Bowl Sunday. The Super Bowl is the annual championship game of the National Football League (NFL), and it is the highest professional football in the United States…just for the few % that might not know. The day on which the Super Bowl is played is now considered a de facto American national holiday, and is the second-largest day for U.S. food consumption, after Thanksgiving Day. Crazy! So what does the Super Bowl XVLI have to do with horses? With the game having such an expansive audience, the commercials are...

Mountains of Colorado: At Black Mtn Ranch

As the snow is creeping its way to Colorado, it brings a sense of peace and stillness to the Mountains. There is such a profound beauty and richness to our surroundings. The once rich and green hills are about to be covered in a blanket of snow, the pastures where the horses graze are empty and silent. While we are anxiously awaiting for the summer to arrive and the cabins to fill with the chatter of guests, the weather brings us a reminder to slow down, tend to the fire, make another hot chocolate and enjoy the off season. We are looking...

Poetry at our Colorado Dude Ranch

One might not think that poetry and cowboys make a good pair, but we decided to challenge our fans to write a horse haiku as part of the entry for our giveaway. Entries will be taken until February 28th, so you have plenty of time to sit down with a pencil and paper and get creative. Here are two of our favorites so far! Will yours be one?     hai·ku  noun \ˈhī-(ˌ)kü\ plural haiku Definition of HAIKU:  : an unrhymed verse form of Japanese origin having three lines containing usually five, seven, and five...

Our Colorado Dude Ranch Horses

The Horses at Black Mountain Ranch are quite the herd. We have a horse to match every rider, from novice to advanced. Our team of horses is always capable of meeting your skill level. We have been asked more than once, “So just where do your horses come from?” Most of our herd travels from South Dakota to hit our trails in Colorado. We typically purchase “green broke” horses for our ranch. A “green broke”  horse means they have taken a saddle and have had a rider on their back a few times. When the horses...

On Following Dreams

Be Truthful, Gentle and Fearless. –Gandhi We recently rediscovered the work of Heather Jansch, a British sculptor whose work is most known for her full size driftwood horse sculptures. What inspires us the most is her passion. Growing up a country girl, Heather knew she wanted to be surrounded by horses and become an artist. After a rocky relationship as a young adult with schooling and its confines, she went on to study at Goldsmith College in London. A year into the program Heather states, “I was asked to leave the course. I was told...

The Off Season: Winters at a Colorado Dude Ranch

There is a beauty in the winter at Black Mountain Ranch that is like no other. Although we close our doors to customers in September that doesn’t mean the ranch empties out. Most of our family resides on the property year round. Our horses enjoy greener (and warmer) pastures for the winter, but we stay to enjoy the other side of mountain life. This photograph was captured last weekend on one of our family’s snowmobile rides. Some of these pines are lost to the beetle kill that has plagued the Rockies over the past few...

Of Poetry found among the Horses of a Colorado Dude Ranch

This quote is the title of Alice Walkers’s collected poems, “Horses make a landscape look more beautiful”. Her inspiration was from a Native American shaman, who, when reflecting on the terrible problems brought to his land by white settlers, had it in his heart to nearly forgive them all because with white man came  horses to the North American plains. What does poetry have to do with a Colorado dude ranch? It is in our nature to seek beauty and as a working ranch, not only are we surrounded by such beauty as Rockies can...
