There is just something pristine, exciting and invigorating about mounting and assuming command of a strong, magnificent creature that attracts a diverse crowd. The two-legged kind of riders our horses enjoy; however, there are other "riders" they don't enjoy at all—the kind that buzz! That is why certain clothing and scents are a definite no-no when it comes to horse riding and other clothing items are an absolute must have. Since safety is paramount when horse riding, let's talk about clothing absolutes: boots with a 1 & 1/2-2 inch heel and a rubber or wooden sole are essential. The heels will keep your foot from slipping through the stirrups, which could put you in danger. Your foot needs to be able to come quickly out of the stirrup in an emergency, which would be impossible if the lack of a proper heel allowed your entire foot to go through the stirrup. Also, you should make sure that your choice of clothing is loose enough to be comfortable, in mounting, unmounting and in the saddle as the horse moves along. Clothing that makes a lot of noise in the wind is unsettling to some horses. Likewise, clothing that makes too much of a visual statement (bright colors and sequins) might attract those previously mentioned unwanted "riders." The same thing can be said about fragrances. While it might be tempting to try to mask some of the horse's natural aroma (the kind they occasionally leave be hind), it isn't a great idea to do this by smelling like a flower!
