Colorado Dude Ranch Vacations

What To Pack?

Suggested Dude Ranch Vacation Packing List

There's a saying in the Colorado highcountry. If you don't like the weather, wait 5 minutes. The point is, things change and they can change quickly. While a majority of the time the weather is absolutely beautiful, it can change and it's important to be prepared. That's why we have put together a suggested packing list for your Colorado Dude Ranch vacation!

Horse Back Riding:

  • Jeans or riding pants
  • Athletic undergarments
  • Chaps or Chinks, if you have them (if not, they are available for rent or purchase in the Trading Post!)
  • Smooth-soled boots (hiking boots or tennis shoes are not ok)
  • Long-sleeved shirt* or other layers
  • Hat* that will stay on in the wind (Cowboy hats* with a stampede string* offer the most protection; baseball caps* work ok)
  • Riding helmet, if you have your own and choose to wear one (we have helmets available for those who choose to wear one, free of charge.)
  • Raingear, if you have your own (we do have rain jackets available for your use.)
  • Gloves* (for protection from sun, rain, sleet, hail, trees) if you choose to wear them.

Other Necessities:

  • A light jacket* or fleece, warm jacket* for early and late season
  • Sweatshirt and sweatpants* (great for pack camp)
  • Wool cap or beanie* for cold nights/pack camp
  • A nice outfit or two, for dancing in the saloon, cocktail party, or getting fancy for a trip into town.  ( Colorado fancy, by all means. Dress jeans or a casual cocktail dress with cowboy boots is how we roll!)
  • Small overnight bag or backpack for pack camp
  • Sunglasses*
  • Sunscreen* (the sun is really intense up here!!)
  • Watch, or other method of keeping time
  • Bug repellant*
  • Camera & camera battery charger
  • Flashlight or head lamp
  • Aspirin, ibuprofen, allergy relief, acetaminophen, Etc.*

For Rafting:

  • Bathing Suit (also for use in hot tubs and swimming pool.)
  • Shorts
  • River sandals or shoes you don’t mind getting wet
  • The rafting company provides wet suits, booties, splash jackets, helmets & life vests

We have a “Boot Library” of about 3 dozen broken in, well worn riding boots you are welcome to use, but there is no guarantee your size will be available. *These items are available to purchase in the Trading Post!

A Note on our weather Average summer highs are in the 70’s & 80’s with very low humidity. Overnight lows are typically in the 40’s & 50’s. Our typical summer weather pattern includes widely scattered afternoon showers, mostly of the short duration! However, the weather can vary greatly here in the mountains and changes rapidly. Sleet, snow, & hail may even occur occasionally. If you are visiting in May, early June or late September, be prepared for a bit cooler temperatures.
