The Horses at Black Mountain Ranch are quite the herd. We have a horse to match every rider, from novice to advanced. Our team of horses is always capable of meeting your skill level. We have been asked more than once, "So just where do your horses come from?" Most of our herd travels from South Dakota to hit our trails in Colorado. We typically purchase "green broke" horses for our ranch. A "green broke"  horse means they have taken a saddle and have had a rider on their back a few times. When the horses make it to our ranch, they spend a year training under our wranglers to ensure they are ready for our guests. We want to make sure each horse meshes well with the herd, and encounters all variables that can happen on a trail ride. Once they have proven themselves trail worthy, they join our dude string, which usually is made up of 70-80 horses. Each one carries a gentle, trustworthy nature and once with the herd makes each trail ride fun, whatever the rider’s experience. Our horses are sure to show each guest an amazing time at our dude ranch.
